FAST & PERFECT RAILROAD

The actual name of this route was the Franklin & Pittsylvania Railroad. Between 1880-1932, it ran between Gretna and Rocky Mount in Virginia.

These stations are listed on a timetable printed in the Franklin Chronicle in 1915 (reproduced in Rocky Mount, Virginia Railroadin' Since 1880 and Dorothy Cundiff and A. D. Ramsey, "Old Franklin & Pittsylvania Railroad Is Loving Memory for Many: Ran from Gretna to Rocky Mount for a Half Century", Bicentennial Reflections, p60):

(Note the lack of a station at Hodgesville, between Redwood and Rocky Mount.)

Union Hall Station

The Union Hall Station was built in or about 1880. It has been named an Endangered Site by the Roanoke Valley Preservation Foundation. It also appears in a compilation by the Railroad Station Historical Society.

Location:

The depot is 60 feet wide and 20 feet deep. It stands on the south side of Old Franklin Turnpike (VA 40), a short distance east of the intersection with Kemp Ford Road (Route 945). Although a local resident indicates that this building was relocated 300 feet to the west on the same parcel, there seems barely enough land to allow such a move. As 1 pole = 16.5 feet, the length of the parcel, described as 23.32 poles, must have been 384.8 feet.
