My Other Hobbies and Interests and Family

Amateur Radio isn't my only hobby.  Twice a week I join with another bunch of old duffers in a Seniors group to try our luck at "Cow Pasture Pool" - as some have called it.  In the fall of 1996 - ten weeks after the by-pass surgery I scored my second career hole-in-one. But, by far my greatest thrill in golf though was that most rare of shots - a Double Eagle on the Par 5 Eleventh hole at London Downs.  My playing partner birdied the hole and continues to relate the story to everyone that in his 35 years of playing golf it was the first time he had a Birdie on a hole and lost by TWO strokes.  At my advanced age I have finally learned to not take golf seriously as it is only a game.  Consequently my scores have improved.  My present goal is have a round of 78, equal to my persent age.

At an earlier age I participated in the sport of soaring.  I was a glider instructor in the Blue Ridge Soaring Society.   I earned the Soaring Society of America "Silver C" award, which requires a 1,000 meter gain in altitude, a 50 km cross country flight, and a flight of 5 hours duration.

I am a retired consulting engineer previously involved in the design of electrical systems for various projects.
Prior to being a engineer I worked with a contracting firm in Roanoke, Virginia and ran the Electrical side of the business.  Our company did the Mechanical and Electrical installation for a hotel in Doha, Qatar and a motel in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.

For the past fifty-one+ years, I have been happily married to Carolyn.  We have three children.  Our son Doug works for the FDIC in Washington, D.C.  He has been actively involved in the "Big Brothers" program and he and his "Little Brother" Jesse have often visited us here at the lake.  Doug is looking forward to early retirement and thinking of moving to this area.

Our older daughter, Nancy has been a SIM missionary in Niger, West Africa with her husband and our two grandsons.  They returned the spring of 2008 for Nancy to have an operation.  After which they returned to their post in Goure', Niger.  The picture below was taken in Goure' prior to their most recent return so that the older  grandson, Bryce could enter Wheaton College this fall.

Our youngest daughter, Allison lives in Durham, North Carolina with her husband and our other three grandsons.  They visit us quite often and Grandma Carolyn and I really enjoy having them with us.

We live at Smith Mountain Lake on the Franklin county side.  My wife raises flowers in her small greenhouse, is involved in singing groups and directs a Hand Bell Choir at our church and still water-skiis. I never got into fishing but oftten drive the boat so that Carolyn can continue amazing folks that at her age of 77 she can still water ski.  We live on a peninsula with water on three sides, so I've got a great ground plane.
